A new website called Speak Up Reach Out is the latest addition to the suicide prevention resources available in Eagle Valley, Colorado. The site offers information on suicide warning signs, how to communicate with someone who is suicidal, and where to get help. One of the help resources listed on the site, Colorado West Mental Health Center, provides same-day, walk-in assistance, regardless of ability to pay. Speak Up Reach Out complements other resources provided by the Vail and Eagle Valley Suicide Prevention Coalition, including suicide prevention gatekeeper training. In the near future, the coalition hopes to make a few beds at a treatment facility available for people who are experiencing a suicidal crisis. “When police get involved, we have to handcuff and detain someone,” said Avon Police Officer Greg Daly. “People are effectively treated like criminals. We want to change that paradigm.”
