Mental illness is present in about 90 percent of people who take their own lives, said Joanne Harpel, director of survivor initiatives for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
She said that in the wake of a student suicide, schools should stress that link and include a message that help is available.
“It’s not about whether the person (who died) was a hero or a quitter,” Harpel said. “It’s not in the realm of judging the person. It’s in the realm of recognizing that just as you can die of cancer or a brain tumor, you can die of mental illness.”
